Borussia Dortmund set to seal deal for Donyell Malen

Dortmund in the market

Borussia Dortmund are set to land PSV Eindhoven’s forward Donyell Malen in a deal worth 30 million euros in the coming days as they prepare for life without Jadon Sancho.

The Dutchman, who found the back of the net 19 times last season in 32 appearances for the Dutch side, also featured for the Netherlands at Euro 2020, providing 2 assists.

As per transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Malen has “just signed his contract with Borussia Dortmund”, with official announcement of the deal expected soon.

Replace Sancho, or Haaland?

It is expected that Malen will join the club to replace Jadon Sancho, who left for Manchester United this summer. However, this seems difficult to believe. According to transfermarkt.co.uk, Malen has played 76 games as a striker for PSV, but just 30 as a winger (22 as a left winger, and eight as a right-winger).

As a result, it seems odd that the Black and Yellow would bring in someone of his profile to fill the boots of Sancho, who spent his entire career on the wing, unless there was another move or a change of system mooted.

One thing that would make the transfer more clear would be the departure of prodigious talent Erling Haaland, who has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea this summer. However, no bid has yet been received, whilst it is thought it would take an astronomical amount to persaude Dortmund to sell.

Nevertheless, are the German club covering all eventualities in case they do lose their star man?
