Rudiger's Chelsea stint
Rudiger has been on Chelsea's books since July of 2017. All told, Rudiger has featured 149 times in all competitions for Chelsea, across which he has scored seven goals and provided three assists.
But Rudiger's standing at Chelsea have varied a fair bit, especially over the course of the 2020/21 campaign.
Throughout much of Frank Lampard's time at the club, Rudiger proved something of a fringe player.
During the first half of last campaign, for example, the stopper was afforded just two Premier League appearances.
Such a lack of minutes even led to speculation that Rudiger was set for a move to PSG during the winter transfer window.
Rudiger, in the end, stayed put, but initially continued to struggle for regular Premier League action. However, Frank Lampard was then sacked, before Thomas Tuchel took the reins at the back end of January.
And since the latter's appointment as Chelsea boss, Rudiger has seen his game-time dramatically increase, becoming a key cog in the side that won the Champions League back in May.
Rudiger confirms contract talks
Despite his return to favour, though, Rudiger's long-term future at Chelsea has remained up in the air for some time now.
This comes with the German now having less than one year left on his current contract at the Bridge.
However, on Tuesday, Rudiger has provided an update on his contract situation, and it is good news for fans of the German.
Chelsea are set to face off with Villareal in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday evening.
Ahead of the tie, Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Rudiger would both speak to the media.
When Rudiger was doing so, he was inevitably drawn on his contract situation. This led to the stopper explaining that he wanted to concentrate on Euro 2020, but now he is back, talks over a deal have begun:
"As I said before, I wanted to concentrate on the Euros then after I come back, talks can start. That is what has happened for now. Talks have begun and we will see what time brings."
